Chernivtsi Region is located in western Ukraine and comprises the northern parts of Bukovina and Bessarabia. It shares an international border with Romania and Moldova. In terms of both area and population, it is the smallest region in Ukraine. The administrative center is the city of Chernivtsi.
The region covers three geographical zones: the forest-steppe area of the Prut and Dniester confluence, the foothill area of the Carpathian Mountains along the Prut, and the mountainous zone of the Bukovynian Carpathians. A total of 75 rivers longer than 10 km flow through the region, the largest being the Dniester, Prut, and Siret.
Chernivtsi Region borders Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, and Vinnytsia Regions of Ukraine, as well as Romania and Moldova. The state border of Ukraine within the region extends for 226 km with Romania and 198 km with Moldova. Chernivtsi Region is located 570 km from Kyiv, 280 km from Lviv Airport, 750 km from the Odesa seaport, 340 km from Poland, and 450 km from Hungary. Administratively, the region is divided into 3 districts, comprising 11 cities, 8 urban-type settlements, and 250 villages.
Industry specialization: agriculture and food production (fruits and vegetables), fish farming (trout and salmon), light industry, mechanical engineering, and electrical equipment manufacturing.
Natural resources: oil and gas reserves, forests (beech, oak, spruce), loam, anhydrite, gypsum, limestone, and mineral and thermal springs.
The region hosts 4 universities and 7 technical schools. The leading higher education institutions are Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Bukovinian State Medical University, and the Chernivtsi Institute of Trade and Economics.
As of August 2025, the unemployment rate in the region stood at 10.1% (compared to the national average of 9.9%), while the average monthly salary reached $447, against the national level of $627.
