Chernihiv

Chernihiv Oblast is located in the north of Ukraine. The administrative centre is Chernihiv city. It borders Sumy, Poltava, Kyiv regions, Belarus and Russia. Chernihiv region is located 140 km from Kyiv, 506 km from Kharkiv Airport and 610 km from Odesa Seaport.
Chernihiv Oblast is administratively divided into 5 districts. A total of 45 cities, 30 urban-type settlements, and 1489 villages.
The economy of the Chernihiv region is centred around oil and natural gas production, transport, engineering, tobacco and textile industries. A large tobacco factory is located in Pryluky. Chernihiv has significant engineering and electronics enterprises, and a brewery for beer production.
Regional GDP in 2021 was 2.8 billion USD (2% of Ukraine’s GDP), FDI stock was 478 million USD (1% of Ukraine’s FDI stock), and export was 0.8 billion USD (1.8% of Ukraine’s export).
Industry specialization: mechanical engineering (electronic and optical devices, medical equipment, agricultural machinery), chemical and petrochemical (oil refining products, plastics), light industry (wool and semi-wool fabrics, footwear), construction and woodworking (parquet, wood products), wallpapers, paints, construction mixtures), food industry (dairy products, butter, alcohol, pasta, drinks).
Natural resources of the region: oil and gas, glass sand, peat, bischofite, cement raw materials, expanded clay raw materials, brick and tile raw materials, and building chalk.
There are 6 universities and 3 technical schools in the region. The leading universities are Chernihiv National University, Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv Collegium National University and Chernihiv Institute of Information, Business and Law.
The unemployment rate in the region was 12.3% (average in Ukraine 9.9%) and the average salary was 346 USD (average in Ukraine 430 USD) in 2021.
