The Zakarpattia Region occupies a unique border location, sharing boundaries with four EU member states — Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. The administrative center is the city of Uzhhorod, which enjoys a highly advantageous transport and logistics position for cross-border cooperation and international trade.

The region demonstrates a clear agro-industrial specialization. Its major industries include woodworking, food production, pulp and paper manufacturing, light industry, and mechanical engineering. A significant share of output comes from the food sector, particularly the processing of milk, meat, and fruits, as well as winemaking — a traditional industry with strong export potential.

Zakarpattia possesses substantial natural resources, including brown coal, polymetallic ores, alunites, dolomites, and significant reserves of rock salt. The forestry sector is well developed, supporting the production of lumber, cardboard, and furniture. Agriculture is notable for its extensive perennial plantations, vineyards, and orchards, creating favorable conditions for the development of organic farming and agro-processing industries.

The region’s mild climate and diverse landscapes provide excellent opportunities for tourism and recreation, while its well-developed network of roads and railways ensures efficient access to the markets of Central and Southern Europe.

The Zakarpattia Region hosts 11 higher education institutions, among which the leading ones are Uzhhorod National University, Mukachevo State University, and the Transcarpathian Academy of Art.

As of August 2025, the average monthly salary in the region reached $520, compared to the national average of $627.
