Сonstruction of a complex for the processing, neutralization and storage of municipal solid waste in the Metallurgical District of Kryvyi Rih

Construction of a waste processing plant with a capacity of 150 thousand tons of mixed waste per year, which meets high quality standards, similar to those built in the EU countries.

The plant will be integrated, that is, it will have its own sorting station for waste, a line for the production of RDF alternative fuels and recyclables, as well as an organic waste composting plant.

The land plot for the placement of a complex for the processing of solid waste is located in the Metallurgicheskydistrict of Krivyi Rih in the industrial zone.

As a result of the complex’s exploitation, it is expected to receive:

• secondary raw materials; 
• RDF fuel (there is a large cement production facility in the city); 
• technical compost (for use in the recultivation of damaged solid).

Duration 2 years.

Project goals

• Reduction of solid waste disposal volumes by increasing the level of sorting, recycling, and utilization.
• Production of secondary raw materials, RDF fuel, and technical compost for land reclamation. 
• Mitigation of the negative impact of waste on the environment and public health.
• Creation of new jobs and attraction of investments in the waste management sector.
• Improvement of environmental safety and quality of life for urban residents.

Technical details of the project

Land plot characteristics:

• area: 45.77 ha;
• intended purpose: for the placement and operation of the main, auxiliary and auxiliary buildings and structures of enterprises of the processing, machine-building and other industries for the new construction of a complex for the processing, neutralization and storage of municipal solid waste
• cadastral number: issued;
• leaseholder: Kryvyi Rih city council.

Transport infrastructure:

• national highway: H11 (Dnipro-Mykolaiv) – 6.5 km, H23 (Kirovohrad – Kryvyi Rih – Zaporizhzhia) – 6.2 km;
• regional road: R-74 – 5.5 km.

Additional information

Kryvyi Rih is the 2nd largest city in Dnipropetrovsk region and the 8th largest city in Ukraine. Its population is almost 620,000 and the total amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) is about 275,000 tons per year. Almost all of municipal solid waste (MSW) is taken to the landfill without prior processing and with minimal sorting. This creates a stable and predictable amount of raw materials for the complex.

The location has a beneficial location, developed infrastructure and strong industrial cluster which provides stable channels for cooperation and consumption of processed products in particular RDF fuel for cement plants.

Local authorities with the support of DIA and EBRD performed systematic preparations:

• amended the General Plan of Kryvyi Rih, which provides for the location of municipal solid wast complex;
• allocated a land plot with an area of 45.77 ha; 
• developed a feasibility study for this waste processing complex;
• conducted an environmental impact assessment and received a positive conclusion.
